BEXHILL-ON-SEA TOWN COUNCIL

VACANCY FOR TOWN COUNCILLOR ST STEPHENS WARD (CO-OPTION)

Bexhill-on-Sea Town Council invites applications from residents interested in serving their community as a Town Councillor. Following a recent vacancy, the Council will co-opt a new member to join its team of councillors, representing St Stephens Ward.

What Does a Town Councillor Do?

Town Councillors are the voice of the community, representing residents' views and making decisions on local services, giving comments planning matters, and organising community initiatives. The role involves attending council meetings and engaging with constituents in your ward to enhance the quality of life in Bexhill-on-Sea.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be eligible for co-option, applicants must:
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland.
  • Meet at least one of the following qualifications:
  1. Be registered as a local government elector for Bexhill-on-Sea.
  2. Have occupied land or premises in Bexhill-on-Sea as an owner or tenant for the past 12 months.
  3. Have had their principal or only place of work in Bexhill-on-Sea for the past 12 months.
  4. Have resided in Bexhill-on-Sea or within three miles of its boundary for the past 12 months.

Please note that certain disqualifications apply, such as holding a paid office under the local authority or having specific criminal convictions.

Application Process

Interested individuals should submit a written application outlining their reasons for wanting to become a Town Councillor and the skills they can bring to the role. Applications must be received by Friday, 20th June 2025.

Applicants will be invited to attend the Full Council meeting on Wednesday, 25th June 2025 at 6:00 PM at Bexhill Senior Citizens Club, Eversley Road, Bexhill-on-Sea.

During the meeting, candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves, and the Council will make its selection.

  • Two valid nominations were received for Bexhill- Collington Ward
  • One valid nomination was received for Bexhill - Kewhurst Ward
  • No valid nominations were received for Bexhill – Old Town & Worsham Ward
  • One valid nomination was received for Bexhill – Pebsham & St Michaels Ward
  • Two valid nominations were received for Bexhill- Sackville Ward
  • Two valid nominations were received for Bexhill- Sidley Ward
  • Two valid nominations were received for Bexhill- St Marks Ward
  • One valid nomination was received for Bexhill – St Stephens Ward

The town council now has 35 days (excluding dies non) beginning with the day on which the election would have been held (Thursday 4 May 2023), to co-opt persons to fill the remaining vacancies.
